A recap of everything Organic Food Together published in April 2026 — grouped by theme, with all the links in one place.
If you've just landed here, the short version of what this is. Organic Food Together is a personal journal investigating where New Zealand's food actually comes from. Who owns the brands. What the labels mean (and don't). Which farms are real, which certifications are real, and where you can buy the food that matches what you thought you were getting.
The word "organic" has no legal protection in New Zealand yet. Anyone can put it on a packet. That's the gap this site lives in.
A new piece goes up most days. April was the site's fourth month, and in many ways the month where the editorial shape started to settle. The water series ran in full. The first major brand investigations landed. The food system pieces that became the Long Drift in May were being drafted underneath the posts. Below is everything from April.
Early Days Note
A reminder for anyone arriving here from later in the year. April 2026 was the site's fourth month of publication. The Guides hadn't been built yet. The Real Food Map wouldn't go live until May. Some of the conventions that would settle later — the hub-and-spoke architecture, the producer profile series — were still being worked out in the open. A few of the posts below are early experiments. Most have aged well; a couple have been updated since.

April broke into several threads. Here they are.
The Water Series
The dominant thread in April was water — what's in it, what's been added to it, and what most of us assume about it that isn't quite right.
It started with What's Actually In Auckland's Tap Water. Most Aucklanders assume their water comes from clean bush catchments. About fifteen percent comes from the Waikato River — four hundred kilometres through dairy farms, geothermal country, and industrial towns. Knowing that changed how I thought about everything that followed.
The next day: Why I Bought An RO Filter. What's actually in your water between the treatment plant and your glass, and why understanding that changed what I do about it.
Then If You're On Tank or Bore Water, Nobody Is Checking For You — the rural water question. Different infrastructure, different risks, and a regulatory gap most people don't know exists.
A week later the technical pieces landed. Does Chlorine in Tap Water Affect Your Gut Microbiome? Chlorine is in your tap water to kill pathogens. The question researchers have started asking is what it does once you drink it. The answer is genuinely unsettled.
Then the bone-leaching RO fear, which I get asked about a lot. The fear is unfounded. But once you start asking what RO removes, a bigger question opens up — about what's being added to your water supply, where it comes from, and what your filter actually does for you.
The series closed with What fluoride is doing in your tap water. Fluoride is a medical intervention delivered without consent. Most of Europe said no. New Zealand said yes — by government directive, later found by courts to have inadequately considered the right to refuse medical treatment. This one took the longest to write.
The Food System
A second thread ran alongside the water series — the structural pieces about where New Zealand's food actually comes from, and why that's changing.
The Strait of Hormuz and your butter. When the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed in March, it didn't just disrupt oil. A third of the world's fertiliser trade moved through that channel. NZ farming felt it. This piece is the one that set the structural questions for the rest of the month.
The Clean Green Country That Imports Its Dinner. New Zealand exports its premium food and imports cheaper alternatives to fill the gap. Underneath that paradox sit the GE Technology Bill, glyphosate residues, imported food standards, and what organic certification can and can't protect.
Can New Zealand Feed Itself? — the long one. Wattie's and McCain are closing. Marsden Point is rubble. The trams are gone. New Zealand keeps dismantling what works and calling the rebuild progress. About five thousand words. This piece became the foundation that the Long Drift series in May was built on.
NZ's Organic Sector Just Hit $1.18 Billion. So Why Is the Pipeline Shrinking? Exports growing at nearly double the rate of the wider primary sector. But buried in the same report: a 78% collapse in new farm conversions. The number that should have been a headline.
And to close the thread: When NZ Stopped Canning Its Own Peaches. Hawke's Bay orchardists pulling peach trees out of the ground after Wattie's cut their contracts. Chinese dumping. Kraft Heinz's global logic. A trade relationship NZ can't afford to challenge. And what happens when food processing infrastructure disappears for good.
Brands and Ownership
April was the month the first brand investigations landed.
Who owns your lunch — the Wattie's piece. The brand has said "NZ's Favourite" since 1934. The company behind it has been American since 1992. The story of how brand trust gets bought, transferred and quietly spent. And why your KiwiSaver might be funding the whole thing.
The next day: The egg aisle looks simple. It isn't. Eight egg brands on a shelf, a range of prices, lots of welfare claims. Follow the ownership trails and it's more concentrated than it appears. This piece set the foundation for the full egg investigation that ran in May.
Chanel Buys Into NZ's Largest Organic Farm. A French fashion house bought into a Central Otago high country station. Lammermoor has been certified organic since 2002, produces fine wool for Chanel garments, and runs one of NZ's rarest distilleries. The piece that introduced ROC to OFT readers — and indirectly seeded the May piece on regenerative organic certification.
When Fonterra Goes Organic, Something Shifts. Fonterra's South Island organic expansion looks like an export play, and it probably is. But when NZ's largest dairy co-op puts real infrastructure behind organic farming, something shifts for the whole sector. This was the piece that got picked up — a TV interview invitation followed, which I declined.
What "Organic" Actually Means
A pair of foundational pieces that aren't time-sensitive, but matter as anchor points for everything else on the site.
What Does the Organic Label Actually Mean? The word "organic" has no legal protection in New Zealand. Here's what the certification marks actually mean, who issues them, and what sits outside the system entirely. If you're new to the site, this is one of the most useful single pages to start with.
What "Organic" Actually Used to Mean — the other half. In 1940, a shy English farmer coined the word to describe something specific: a farm as a living system. Eighty years later the word is on everything. The idea is harder to find.
The Real Food Out There
A thread that ran quietly across the month — the case that good food still exists in New Zealand, and the question of how you find it.
Huckleberry Farms: Thirty Years of Organic Dreaming in New Zealand was the first OFT post in April. For thirty years, Huckleberry was the beating heart of organic food retail in Auckland. From a single Greenlane store in 1994 to twelve locations across the North Island, it built something the supermarket duopoly could never replicate. In June 2024, it was gone.
Two days later: The Organic Food Is Out There. Finding It Is the Hard Part. A patchwork of farms, collectives, butcheries, and stores quietly trying to solve one of organic food's most stubborn problems — how do you get good food from a small farm to the people who actually want it? This piece was the seed of what eventually became the Real Food Map.
Where do you go to learn how organic food actually grows? — for the people who want to understand the practice underneath the label.
And Little Farms and the quiet case for doing it differently. A former solicitor, a no-dig garden, and eleven Wairarapa farms working together. Country Calendar aired their story; this piece adds what the TV didn't have time for.
Standalone Investigations
Two pieces that didn't fit a thread but stood on their own.
Three Months In. Here's What I've Been Finding. The first looking-back piece on this site. It started with one exceptional strawberry. Three months later: fragile processing capacity, hidden supply chains, and quiet resilience in NZ's food system.
Beyond the Bread Test: Glyphosate Residues, Your Gut Microbiome, and What You Can Actually Do About It. April 2026 testing found glyphosate in six of eight supermarket breads — highest in the wholegrain and seed-heavy loaves many of us choose for health. But the real story is what those everyday exposures may be doing to your gut bacteria. This piece is what eventually led to the chicken GM soy investigation in May.
