New Zealand's Most Awarded Organic Wines, 2022 to 2026
We counted every medal that certified organic New Zealand wines won at the big local and international shows over five years. One sparkling wine won its category five years running. One Chardonnay won the whole show three years in a row.
The short answer: Greystone Chardonnay is the most awarded certified organic wine in New Zealand at the major shows from 2022 to 2026, with six trophies and five gold medals. Quartz Reef's vintage Blanc de Blancs is next. By winery, Greystone leads on trophies, ahead of Quartz Reef, Terrace Edge and Amisfield.
Quartz Reef has won Champion Sparkling at the Organic Wine Awards five years in a row. In 2022 it was the Vintage Rosé 2016. In 2023 and 2024 it was the Vintage Blanc de Blancs 2017. In 2025 and 2026 it was the Vintage Blanc de Blancs 2019.
Same wine, two vintages, four straight wins. At some point the other sparkling producers must check the entry list and sigh.
That's one line in a much bigger count. I went through five years of results from the shows that matter to New Zealand organic wine and recorded every medal won by a wine from a certified organic producer. The result is 973 medals and trophies, spread across 392 wines from 56 wineries.
How the count works
The Organic Wine Awards is the only show built for this. Its site says plainly that the awards are for certified organic wine.
The other shows judge organic and conventional wine side by side. For those, a medal only counts here if the wine itself is organic. That means the producer makes only organic wine, or the wine is labelled organic, or that wine is named on the BioGro certified products register. Plenty of wineries make both. Their conventional wines' medals stay out. If you want to know what organic covers in a vineyard and a winery, the Organic Wine Week piece explains it.
Every winery in this count was matched to a current certificate on the BioGro or AsureQuality registers in October 2026. Wineries I couldn't match aren't included for now, even where they have won at the Organic Wine Awards.
Shows covered, 2022 to 2026: the Organic Wine Awards, the National Wine Awards, the New World Wine Awards, the New Zealand International Wine Show, the Marlborough Wine Show's organic trophy, the Decanter World Wine Awards and the IWSC.
Trophies here include champion wines, Wine of the Show, and Decanter's Best in Show and Platinum awards.

| 10= | Gibbston Valley China Terrace | 2 | 1 | 2021, 2023 |
| 10= | Mount Edward Muirkirk Pinot Noir | 2 | 1 | 2024 |
Greystone Chardonnay won Wine of the Show at the Organic Wine Awards three years running: the 2021 vintage in 2023, the 2022 in 2024 and the 2023 in 2025.
Palliser's Hua Nui Pinot Noir is the one on this list that has done most of its winning overseas. At Decanter it was named Best in Show in 2023, and won Platinum in 2022 and 2026, scoring 97 points each time.
Zephyr Gewürztraminer 2024 took two trophies at the 2024 National Wine Awards: Champion Gewürztraminer and Champion Organic Wine. The first was won against every Gewürztraminer in the show, organic or not.
Mount Edward Muirkirk Pinot Noir 2024 has only one vintage on the list. It won Champion Pinot Noir and Wine of the Show at the 2026 Organic Wine Awards.
The most awarded organic wineries
| Winery | Trophies | Gold | Silver | Bronze |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Greystone | 14 | 20 | 16 | 10 |
| Quartz Reef | 7 | 14 | 13 | 8 |
| Terrace Edge | 5 | 24 | 23 | 16 |
| Amisfield | 5 | 22 | 21 | 8 |
| Giesen (organic wines only) | 4 | 11 | 28 | 17 |
Greystone won three of the eight champion wine trophies at the Organic Wine Awards in 2025, and three of the nine in 2026. It was also named Vineyard of the Year in 2026. Its Pinot Gris has been Champion Pinot Gris three years running.
Terrace Edge has more gold medals than anyone, at 24. It just converts fewer of them into trophies.
The best by grape
Pinot Noir. Palliser Estate Hua Nui leads, on the strength of those three Decanter results. Gibbston Valley China Terrace won Champion Pinot Noir at the Organic Wine Awards in 2023 and 2025.
Chardonnay. Greystone, by a distance. Giesen's Single Vineyard Clayvin Chardonnay 2018 won the Marlborough Wine Show's organic trophy in 2022. Wrights Reserve Chardonnay 2024 was Champion Chardonnay in 2026.
Sauvignon Blanc. Tapi was Champion Sauvignon Blanc at the Organic Wine Awards in 2022 and 2024, and its 2021 was Wine of the Show in 2022. Rimapere Plot 101 Sauvignon Blanc 2024 won the Marlborough Wine Show's Champion Organic Wine trophy in 2025.
Pinot Gris. Greystone, three champion trophies from three vintages in a row.
Riesling. Five different wineries have won Champion Riesling at the Organic Wine Awards in the last five years: Amisfield, Carrick, Peregrine, Terrace Edge and Greystone. No clear leader.
Syrah. Terrace Edge has two different Syrahs among the champions: its Chosen Barrels Syrah 2019 in 2024 and its Syrah 2023 in 2026. Giesen won in 2022 and 2023, Greystone in 2025.
Rosé. Terrace Edge and Amisfield have two Champion Rosé titles each.
Sparkling. Quartz Reef. See above. And above that.
Each of these gets its own guide over the coming weeks, with the full list for that grape.
What about biodynamic?
As of early October 2026, seven wine producers were listed on the international Demeter register, which certifies biodynamic farming: Black Estate, Felton Road, Peregrine, Quartz Reef, Rippon, Seresin and Green Ridge Estate. Burn Cottage is listed as converting to Demeter.
Three of them show up strongly in this count. Quartz Reef is second on the winery list. Peregrine has 11 gold medals, and its Riesling 2022 was Champion Riesling in 2024. Seresin Chardonnay 2021 was Champion Chardonnay in 2022.
Felton Road, Black Estate, Burn Cottage and Green Ridge Estate didn't appear in any of the results I collected. That most likely means they don't enter these shows. It says nothing about the wine.
What this list can't tell you
A medal belongs to one vintage. The bottle on the shelf may be a newer one that nobody has judged yet.
A winery that enters four shows has four chances to win. One that enters none has zero, and some very good organic producers sit out entirely.
Some results were out of reach. The New Zealand International Wine Show's full results for 2023 to 2025 are no longer online, nor are the National Wine Awards' full medal lists for 2022 and 2023. The International Wine Challenge and Mundus Vini weren't covered.
So this is the most awarded list. It isn't the best list. That one would take a lot more tasting, and a much bigger liver.
Quartz Reef's 2019 Blanc de Blancs is still winning, seven years after harvest.
