A Rotorua market gardener's story reveals the rewards, and financial realities, of growing organic food in New Zealand.

For nine years, Jenny Lux has been growing organic vegetables on her small property in Ngongotahā, supplying fresh, locally grown food to the Rotorua community.

She's built healthy soil, loyal customers and a business that genuinely makes a difference. But despite doing so much right, making the numbers work remains a constant challenge.

It's a story that raises an important question: If we want more locally grown organic food, how do we make sure the people growing it can actually earn a living?

Michael Andrew's excellent feature for On The Land offers an honest, beautifully illustrated look at the rewards and realities of small-scale organic farming.
